MacPCI-L is a LISTSERV
discussion list aimed at owners of PCI based Power Macintosh machines. This
forum is open to anyone who currently using PCI Macs and is interested in
their setup, configuration, usage, and specifications. Topics include PCI
cards, the new video and SCSI sub-systems, and Open Transport.
Information

- 12/16/95: Apple WorldScript
Updater 1.0 will allow you to use the Chinese Language Kit on you PowerSurge
Macintosh. Note that the update must be installed before the language kit.

Alley v2, issue 17 (Dec 11 95) reports that the Audio
Volume Extension will reduce static heard when the sound output is set
to 16-bit (always on the new Macs). This is contrary to what the Read
Me states. Retrospect 3.0 provides full PCI Mac and Open Transport compatibility,
and is PPC604 optimized. Strata Studio
Pro Blitz v1.75+ is PPC604 optimized. Several users asked about the
Rolling Stones Stripped CD. Although it is currently not compatible with
PCI Macs, the company should be sending out updates. Read the FAQ
for contact information.
- 12/12/95: SpeedDoubler
1.1 is out and fixes catalog BTree problems. A FAQ
also is available. FreePPP
1.0.3 was released but is no longer available due to problems. 1.0.4
is currently in beta. You can update to Norton
Utilities 3.2.1 if you can manage to connect to Symantec's ftp server.
It fixes problems with custom partitioned drives formatted with Hard Disk
Toolkit. Victor Orly <orly@alnitak.usc.edu>
has created Reset
TCP/IP, a KeyQuencer
macro that will reset to TCP/IP control panel to allow multiple PPP connections
without rebooting.
- 12/7/95: Denis Pelli thanks the many users who reported the
results of running TimeCPU. Please do not forward any more results to him.
- 12/4/95: FaxSTF 3.1.4 is compatible with System 7.5.2. AudioStrip
GH 1.3.1 works arounds the problem where audio CD playback stops for
no reason. FWB has released Unlock
Volume to fix a problem caused by using HDT Primer on 7.5.2 machines
with drives formatted by Apple's Drive Setup. Microtek scanner driver 3.0.2b
is an update that works with the PowerSurge Macs. Tech
Tool 1.0.9 and OnTrac Disc Manager 4.0.2 now work properly with System
7.5.2. All the Rolling Stones fans will enjoy Axient's patch that allows
Stripped to run on the new
Macs. Added many pointers to Open Transport Information.
- 11/21/95: Apple has documented problems with certain 7200/90
systems while using the built-in Ethernet interface. Ric Ford provides details.

4.1.9A and FreePPP
1.0.2 are available. FullWrite
2.0.4b4 fixes more problems but users also need the "Misc. Menu
Fixes" extension (not available online). TurboGopher
2.0.3 fixes problems with Open Transport. Caere has realesed new
converters for use with OmniPage Pro that provide System 7.5.2 compatibility.
Denis Pelli <denis@psych.nyu.edu>
has requested that users time their systems using TimeCPU
and send him the results.
- 11/20/95: Although version 4.0 is now shipping, APS PowerTools
was updated
to 3.6 to fix several problems with PCI-based Macs. In the What's
New file they mention a work-around for a "bug in the MacOS"that results in separate partitions sharing the same custom icon. Apparently
it depends on the creation times of the volumes. StarNine has some information
on switching
to MacTCP if you are using Open Transport.
